A valiant train employee who stepped in to protect travelers during a multiple stabbing attack on a express train has sustained critical injuries, police confirmed on Sunday.
Surveillance footage allegedly shows the staff member trying to halt the attacker as the train traveled between a city and another station in Cambridgeshire. Witnesses described a terrifying 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with injured victims fleeing through compartments.
The suspect, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, remains in custody for questioning. Police declared a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
The incident on the weekend led to 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several individuals have now been discharged from hospital.
A bystander recorded the individual brandishing a big knife and being subdued with a Taser as he confronted officers on the station. He was reportedly heard yelling, "Kill me, kill me."
âThis awful event has created broad consequences. My thoughts and those of everyone in British Transport Police are with those injured and their families â particularly the brave member of train personnel whose family are being supported by trained personnel,â stated a senior law enforcement officer.
Rail unions were swift to praise staff and call for more measures. A union leader said he would be âseeking urgent meetings with authorities, rail employers and law enforcement to guarantee that we have the strongest available support, resources and robust procedures in placeâ.
A different union leader encouraged the rail company and government âto move swiftly to review security, to help the impacted workers, and to make sure nothing like this happens againâ.
The train driver who stopped the service at Huntingdon was described as being âdeeply affectedâ but âgoodâ, and has been commended by association officials for doing âprecisely what was neededâ.
âHe did not halt the service in the center of two stations where itâs obviously difficult for the emergency services to reach, but he continued traveling until he got to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost waiting,â explained a association official.
Authorities stated they received the initial distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
One witness described at first thinking if the situation was a holiday joke, but quickly understood from individuals' expressions that it was serious.
Authorities have stated there is no evidence to suggest the event was a terrorist incident and have requested the community to provide with any additional details.
Rail operations on the affected route are expected to experience delays until Monday, with passengers advised to postpone their journeys where feasible.
