Reported Plan to Attack Belgian Prime Minister Thwarted

Belgium's Premier the country's leader

Belgium's law enforcement have taken into custody three suspects accused of plotting an attack on the government's prime minister, Bart de Wever.

Legal authorities labeled the reported plot as a terrorist act motivated by jihadist ideology targeting the PM and other politicians.

During investigations conducted in the Deurne area of Antwerp, close to the prime minister's home, officials discovered a suspected homemade bomb and indications that the individuals were preparing to use a drone.

While the prospective targets of the assault were not officially named by the federal prosecutors, Second-in-command Maxime Prevot stated that the prime minister was one of them.

"Reports of a planned attack aimed at Prime Minister Bart de Wever is profoundly disturbing," the deputy prime minister wrote in a post on online platforms on Thursday.

"This underscores that we are facing a very real terrorism risk and that we have to stay alert," he added.

The three suspects arrested on allegations of terrorism-related attempted murder and involvement in the operations of a extremist organization all live in Antwerp, according to the legal authorities. They were had birth years in the early 2000s.

By the evening of the arrests, one person was freed, while the remaining two were under interrogation and likely to appear in court on Friday.

Federal prosecutors revealed that the individuals were arrested after a magistrate directed raids of their dwellings in the city by law enforcement supported by explosive sniffer dogs.

Throughout these investigations that they found a device which appeared to be an IED, federal prosecutor Ann Fransen stated at a press conference on Thursday.

Searches also revealed a "bag of steel balls" and a additive manufacturing device, with "indications that they intended to use a drone to attach a payload", she added.

Fransen said that there had been 80 extremist probes opened in the country this year - surpassing the full amount of investigations in the previous year.

During the spring, five individuals were convicted for a previous year's plan to strike the prime minister while he was holding the position of the city's chief executive.
