UN Lifts Sanctions on President of Syria Ahead of White House Visit

United Nations Security Council members approved to a United States-backed measure ending penalties on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa before his White House visit the coming week.

He became provisional head of state after leading a rebel offensive that ousted the previous leader in the final month of 2024, ending over a decade of civil war.

America's diplomat UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a strong political signal" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a new era" following Assad's ouster.

He had been subject to United Nations restrictions as the leader of the Muslim faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), once connected to the terrorist network. Washington eliminated the organization from the catalog of global extremist entities during July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

Additionally, the United Nations lifted penalties against the Syrian interior official the interior minister.

The Syrian diplomatic chief welcomed the removal of these restrictions, posting on social media: "Syria expresses its appreciation toward America and supportive states for their support of Syria and its people."

Imminent Washington Talks

President Sharaa's presidential meeting at the start of the week occurs subsequent to American leader Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa had made "good progress" working toward stability to the war-torn country.

Following their discussion, Trump remarked the Syrian leader had "a legitimate chance to unify the country".

The pair met for the first time during May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of Arab nations.

Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" possessing a "powerful background".

His Islamist group HTS operated as the terrorist network's partner in Syria until he severed ties during 2016.

Prior United States Journey

The upcoming meeting is not the president's debut journey to the US during this period. In September, he made history as the initial Syrian president to address the United Nations gathering at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.

Throughout his presentation, he said Syria was "regaining its deserved status within the global community" and demonstrated unity toward Gaza's residents.
