Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Leader Departs After Shift Towards Chicken.

The boss of Domino's Pizza Group who suggested the United Kingdom might have reached maximum pizza demand while broadening the franchise into chicken products has been ousted after disagreements with its board.

Executive Shake-Up

The former CEO is exiting after just two years in the top role, and will be succeeded on an acting basis by the organization's operations head, Frampton, while the pizza giant looks for a permanent CEO.

Rennie, who worked for Domino's for over 20 years, had attempted to redirect Britain's biggest pizza food delivery firm towards poultry-based products, stating in a recent interview there was not “significant expansion” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He noted poultry was the most rapidly expanding protein in the international market.

Governance Tensions

Sources suggest that there was friction between Rennie and the governance team over his focus and management style, although Domino's release said he was leaving “as a joint decision”.

Recent Brand Launch

In the autumn, Domino's introduced its chicken-focused product line – which the former chief described as a “major strategic shift” for the company – and is piloting it in over 200 locations in the north-west of England and Northern Ireland.

While the business is still going to roll it out across its almost 1,400 stores next year as planned, it views chicken products as a supplement for its main pizza offerings.

Leadership Comment

Ian Bull, the company chair, said: “The board believes that there are a range of possibilities to boost expansion and performance improvement in our primary operations. We are focused on identifying the suitable leader to oversee the careful implementation of that development approach.”

Industry Difficulties

In the latest update, Domino's, which has millions of users in the UK and Ireland, said transactions dipped by one and a half percent in the Q3. In August, it alerted that the food delivery sector had “grown more challenging” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the period before the government announcement and rising wage costs for below-target performance and a 15 percent decline in six-month income.

Competitors are also facing challenges. Another major chain disclosed the closure of 68 restaurants a last month, after the company behind its British operations faced financial collapse.

Health Initiatives

Trying to keep up with market shifts towards balanced diets, Domino's has introduced lower-calorie items, such as its Thin & Crispy line of pizzas below 400 kcal as well as plant-based and gluten-free options. A big pepperoni bake has over 2,300 kcal. A big margherita has 2,171, while a small has 909 kcal.

Interim Management

Frampton has been with Domino's since the recent past, and was formerly with the gambling company a well-known operator. It is believed that she prefers not to occupy the top job long-term.

Frampton stated: “Our team has a number of ongoing development and efficiency programs that we will be focused on executing at speed.”

Frampton noted these included additional efforts on the company's supply chain and new item creation, and its loyalty scheme.

Domino's is also in need of a full-time chief financial officer until March 16, when Andrea joins from the beverage producer C&C Group. In the meantime, Snow is interim finance chief.
