Young Australian Charged for Supposedly Placing Sticker Eyes on ‘Blue Blob’ Artwork
A teenager from the Land Down Under has faced legal proceedings after reportedly vandalizing a sizable art piece of a mythical creature by affixing plastic eyes to it.
The 19-year-old, 19 years old, participated via phone at Mount Gambier Magistrates Court in South Australia on that day, charged with one count of property damage.
In a statement at the moment of the recent event, the municipal authorities said that CCTV footage captured a person placing artificial eyes on the artwork, which locals have nicknamed the “Cast in Blue”.
Ms Vanderhorst did not enter a plea and informed the judge she was unwell, according to media sources, with the judge advising her to secure a legal representative before her upcoming hearing in the final month of the year.
A day after the reported event, the city leader stated that restoration to the popular public artwork would be costly as the adhesive eyes were impossible to be removed without damaging the art piece.
“This intentional vandalism to a valued community art is unacceptable and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor said in September. “It is not harmless fun, it is pricey - it is also frustrating to those members of our community who have welcomed Cast in Blue.”
The mayor said the local government would seek the “significant” repair costs from those responsible for the vandalism.
When the sculpture was first proposed, it drew mixed reactions from the local community due to its price tag and design.
Costing 136,000 Australian dollars (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; £68,000), the sculpture represents a mythical megafauna, with the creators influenced by an prehistoric marsupial ant-eater found in local caves that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
