Oscar-Nominated Star Diane Ladd, Celebrated For Her Performance in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Dies at the Age of 89.

Dern, who starred with Diane Ladd in several movies such as Wild at Heart, called her “my wonderful hero and my profound gift as a mother”, writing that she was present during her final moments.

“She was the most wonderful daughter, mother, grandmother, star, artist and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she wrote. “We were blessed to have her. Her spirit soars with angels.”

Early Career and Breakthrough

Ladd’s early career included minor parts on television series such as Gunsmoke while that decade had her appearing alongside Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.

That very year, the year 1974, she shared the screen with actress Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed comedy drama the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. The performance brought Ladd her first Oscar nomination for best supporting actress.

Subsequent Years

Throughout the 1980s, she was seen in the dramatic film Black Widow and humorous film Christmas Vacation and appeared on the show Alice, a television series inspired by her earlier movie.

That period also brought her nominations for Emmy Awards for roles on Dr Quinn, the show Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel, a drama.

Collaborations with Daughter

She continued to star alongside her daughter in films blending humor and drama the film Daddy and Them, the David Lynch project the movie Inland Empire and Mike White’s comedy-drama series Enlightened, a TV series.
