I've been blogging for around two years and am amazed by the volume of traffic I receive through my blog and the volume of people who inform me that they first learned about me from my blog in lieu of visiting my official website. The word"blog" is derived from "web log", or an online journal or diary. If the HBO series "Sex and the City" was being shot today, Carrie Bradshaw would be a blogger as well as a columnist, I would think. Why? When she is confronted with her discoveries regarding love, life, as well as relationships, she could publish them on her blog for everyone to view and share. The internet has allowed the creation of websites to almost everyone, as it takes very little know-how to set up a blog and running. In reality, many service business owners are using a blog platform as their primary site, with some of them making static pages similar to those one would expect on traditional websites, while others are using the platform as an online blog and posting updates regularly. There are many benefits that blogs can offer over traditional websites or ezines. 1. Blogs are a favorite of search engines. The approach that appears to attract search engines today is regularly updating content. I can log-in to my website at start of a day and submit a post. Within 24 hours I'll get a notification from my Google alerts account that Google has indexed my post. If you instruct your visitors to subscribe to your blog via updates services such as Bloglines or Feedblitz They'll be informed within hours of the publication of new posts published on your website. 3. A basic understanding of web programming is needed. Once your blog is up and running it's an issue of logging in to your account, typing the details for your blog post, adding graphics or photos as needed, and publishing the post to your blog. 4. Reader feedback. Your readers can give you feedback and comments about your posts in a matter of minutes when you post an entry. Blogs are a fantastic way to interact with your readers. Are traditional and ezines in decline? Yes, as people consume information differently. Some learners are auditory, and prefer to hear the information (great audience for podcasting, an audio type of blogging) Some prefer to be updated when they're posted (blog readers) While others prefer an enduring, stationary media to which they can reference when they're at their best (readers who keep e-magazines in their archives or bookmark websites). How do you start a blog? Here are 10 simple steps you can follow: 1. Blogging platform. The most straightforward way to get started is to use the free service available through Blogger.com or WordPress.com. The ability to customize your blog is not available with the free options, therefore I suggest my clients sign up to Typepad.com and they will host your blog on their servers. You may also buy a hosting account on which WordPress will be installed. The downloadable version of WordPress is available in WordPress.org and is offered free for those who need to download WordPress yourself in the hosting service you use. I am using Typepad to host my blog, therefore many of my examples are exclusively to blogs that are hosted on this platform. 2. Name. What do you want to call your blog? Names for blogs tend to be attractive and unusual. But, for service companies I counsel my clients to include the keywords that are relevant to their company when naming their blogs. Also, you should purchase an .com variant of the blog's name or your blog's name that includes"blog "blog" attach as your blog URL. Once you've setup your site, you blog's provider will provide more details about how to map your domain name to your blog. (Note: You don't want to just forward your blog's URL to your domain name since this can affect the URLs of your blog's individual pages). 3. Layout and Look. What number of columns do you need to show? Do you want links to static pages? What colors would you like to use? Do you have a signup form to hold a giveaway? You can use one of the templates provided or design something your own? Do you want to see your blog's archives visible? Do you want to be the only writer or do you wish to allow other people to make posts? There are numerous questions you'll be asked during the beginning stages about the design of your blog. A Typepad blog allows you to alter your mind on your design at any time. The best way to determine the appearance for your site is to examine the layout of other blogs and determine which one you prefer. 4. Widgets. There are a number of widgets, also known as add-on programs that you could incorporate on your blog. Check the site of the software you use for your blog for more info about what features you'd like to incorporate into your blog. At a minimum , you'll want to give visitors the option of two ways to get blog updates through various updaters, or feeder services such as the one mentioned earlier. 5. Comments. The newest sp*am making its way around the internet is the comment sp*am. Don't they have something else to be doing? Modify your comments and you need to approve any comments that you post before the blog is published. You'll avoid many headaches and time when you choose to moderate comments. If you've reached this point you'll have a basic blog established and are ready to begin with blogging. 6. Blog content. The time is nowyour blog is waiting to be able to publish posts. What topic do you want to write about? You can write informative writings that appeal to your target market and even comment on a current event, address questions from your customers, or present the results of a case study that outlines how your business was able to help somebody, etc. Keep your eyes and ears open to relevant information that is relevant to your target audience. My blog is where I bring forth info which doesn't work with my newsletter format, or something that arises between newsletter issues. I also post my newsletter content on my blog as well. 7. Posting frequency. Blogs are just like gardens They require regular watering and require attention and care. To maximize the effectiveness of your blog, you need to post often throughout the week to your blog. I usually post four times per week in my blog. Two posts are articles I stumble over or write about as relevant at the time while the remaining 2 are my own content from my ezine posted over 2 days. As well, I try to respond to reader's comments when they come in -- blogs provide the perfect platform for ongoing discussions.
