How to Create Your First Blog
I've been blogging for about 2 years, and I'm awestruck by the volume of traffic I receive through my blog and the number of people who inform me they first heard about me from my blog in lieu of visiting my official website. The word blog is derived from the term "web log", or an online journal or diary. If the HBO show "Sex and the City" was being shot today, Carrie Bradshaw would be a blogger and a columnist, I would think. Why? As she experiences her revelations about life, love, as well as relationships, she could write them up on her blog for the world to see and comment upon. Blogging has opened website creation to anyone, given that it takes very little know-how to get a blog set up and running. In reality, many service business owners are using a blog platform as their primary website and some are even developing static pages like you would find on a typical website and some are making use of the platform as an online blog and posting regular updates. There are several advantages when using blogs over traditional websites, such as ezines and traditional e-newsletters: 1. Blogs are a favorite of search engines. The strategy that seems to attract the search engines of today is frequently updated content. I can log-in to my site at beginning of the day, and post an article. Within 24 hours I'll get a notification from my Google alerts account that Google has indexed my post. Are traditional and ezines dead? Yes, as people consume information in different ways. Some people are auditory learners and would prefer hearing the info (great audience for podcasting, which is an audio form of blogging) Some prefer receiving updates when they are made available (blog readers), while others like an enduring, stationary medium that they can go back to when they're prepared (readers who store ezines or bookmark web pages). How do you begin to blog? Here are 10 easy steps you can follow: 1. Blogging platform. The easiest method to get started is to make use of the free service on and The ability to customize your blog is not possible with the free offerings, so I recommend my customers sign up to and they will host your blog for you on their servers, or buy a hosting account on which WordPress could be installed. The version that is downloadable of WordPress is available in and is completely free of charge if you want to download WordPress yourself using the account you have on your host. I use Typepad for my blog, so many of my examples will relate exclusively to blogs that are hosted on that platform. 2. Name. What do you plan to name your blog? Names for blogs tend to be attractive and non-traditional. But, for service companies, I encourage my clients to choose specific keywords relevant to their company when naming their blog. It is also important to obtain an .com form of your blog's name or your blog's name with"blog "blog" attach as your blog URL. After you've created your website, the web hosting provider can give you more info on how to link your domain to your blog. (Note that you don't want to just forward your blog's address to your domain's name as it can impact the URLs on your individual blog pages). 3. Layout and Look. What number of columns do you want to display? Do you require links to static pages? What colors do you wish to use? Are you interested in a signup page for a giveaway that is free? Should you use one of the templates available or have something custom designed? Do you want to see your blog's archives to be visible? Do you want to be the only blogger or do you prefer to allow others to create posts, as well? There are plenty of questions you'll encounter during the beginning phase about the look for your website. A Typepad blog will allow you to alter your mind on your design later on. The best method to evaluate the appearance for your site is to look at the design of other blogs and determine what appeals to you. 4. Widgets. There are numerous widgets, also known as add-ons that you can integrate to your website. Go to the blog software's website for more information on the features you'd like to incorporate into your blog. You should at a minimum, you'll need to give visitors the option of two ways in which they can receive blog updates using various feed services, or updaters, as already mentioned. 5. Comments. The newest sp*am doing its way around the web is the comment sp*am. Don't these guys have anything better to do? Set your comments to moderated meaning that you have to approve any comments you receive before the blog goes live. You'll avoid many headaches and time by choosing to moderate the comments.
